The 3 Rs Programme: Holistic Child Development

The 3 Rs programme (Reading, Running and Right-ing) strengthens learning, movement and life skills for rural children from Grade R to 12 after school hours.

Providing Holistic Care For Rural Children

We aim to nurture well-rounded young people who are empowered to make a positive contribution to their communities and society as a whole. Our 3 Rs Programme stands for Reading, Running and Right-ing, which we explain below:

READING

3Rs Programme - Reading

Bridging Educational Gaps for Learners

Literacy remains a significant challenge in South Africa, with only 30% of learners in Grades 1 to 3 able to read for meaning in their home language. We help bridge this gap by providing access to books, literacy support, and targeted remedial assistance for children experiencing learning barriers.

Alongside reading development, learners participate in numeracy activities aligned with the South African Department of Basic Education’s curriculum and tailored to their grade level. Children also have access to computers and Wi-Fi, enabling them to develop essential digital literacy skills that will support their educational journey and prepare them for future opportunities.

RUNNING

3Rs Programme - Running

Inspiring Sport Sessions and Events

Our after-school sports programme aims to increase fitness, improve motor skills, foster teamwork and introduce children and teens to new sports. Children develop friendships and a sense of community when participating in these wholesome activities.

Additionally, cycling and fun runs form an exciting part of our programme, with regular weekend activities that involve the wider community. We partner with global sporting events such as the Absa Cape Epic, Wine2Whales and Cape Town marathon, giving our beneficiaries exposure to world-class athletes and sports enthusiasts alike. We invite volunteers to join the children as spectators or offer your mountain biking skills to help coach enthusiastic teens.

RIGHT-ING

3Rs Programme - Right-ing

Instilling World Readiness and Confidence

Beyond art, drama, and life skills activities that encourage creativity, expression and conversation, we strive to broaden the horizons of the children we support. Many of our learners have spent their entire lives on rural farms, with limited opportunities to see places nearby.

Through visits to theatres, beaches, galleries, museums, sporting events, and restaurants, we create opportunities for children to be curious, develop a broader worldview, and imagine possibilities for their future. Sponsors and funders are key to making these outings a reality, often covering expenses for unique cultural trips that might otherwise be out of reach.

Read Messages From Our Children

Anna Foundation helps me a lot. Especially the maths programme. The sport also means a lot to me. It keeps me fit and away from bad things. The drama is excellent. My report is much better now than before. It helps me a lot at school.

Mervin, Student in Grade 8

I am a person who loves travelling. I love getting to know new places, and the Anna Foundation started doing that for me. We travelled out of Paarl and out of the Cape, and it was so interesting because, with the Anna Foundation, we would see things I had only dreamed of seeing. My childhood was the best years.

Marius, Former Anna Foundation Student, now a Facilitator and Law Graduate

We played, laughed and always went to the Anna Foundation after school. It helped me a lot. In primary school I was one of the top students. In high school I struggled a bit, but the Anna Foundation helped me get back on track and become more disciplined. It gave me building blocks for who I am today.
