Big thanks to Kanonkop for organising a fun but informative safety demonstration from the local police and fire departments for children living on the farm. The event took place at the Anna Foundation after school centre located on the wine estate at the end of October 2020. Kanonkop learners were made aware of the many dangers (some obvious, others not) that surround us in our local environments, including dams, fire hazards etc. They were also given sound guidance on...
Christmas come early for our after school centres! What a spoil from the Rotary Club of Somerset West. These LEGO boxes were donated to Anna Foundation and delivered to our after school centres in Boland, Overberg and Langeberg over the course of last month. Students have already spent many an hour building, demolishing and rebuilding the new sets. LEGO improves fine motor skills, encourages teamwork and sparks creativity – sincere thanks to the Somerset West Rotary Club for their...

We are so proud of our scholarship pupil, Mariska, who noticed and acted upon the need within her own farm community for structured educational stimulation while schools are closed. Mariska reached out to us recently with a request for school learning material that she could use to teach younger children on the farm, who have been completely cut off from school since March, due to the lack of digital resources within their school and home environments. Our team put together several activity packs...
Life in lockdown has been long but on Thursday 16th July it felt like Christmas had come early when a beaming Blanche from Hazendal Wine Estate arrived at our Kanonkop afterschool project with a large wooden box full of educational games, activities and reading books. Throwback to a ‘Night of Wonders’ – a Benefit Gala and Auction hosted by and at Hazendal Wine Estate to raise awareness of...
Since 26 March 2020, South Africa has been in national lockdown to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19. With Anna Foundation’s after-school projects closed temporarily, our teams have been working on ways to best access our students in their homes to provide ongoing tutelage despite the physical absence. The majority of learner’ families lack digital connectivity in their homes and tend to access internet on smartphones using pay-as-you-go data. For this reason, we started off by sharing short, low-resolution...
I hope this message finds you safe and well! While we all adapt to a new way of living brought on by COVID-19, you may know that our after school projects are closed, which means that we are not able to reach our learners physically until further notice. These unforeseen circumstances have resulted in some inspired actions from our facilitator teams, who, over and above developing next term’s curriculum, are also working hard to create a library of short, ‘education-based’ video...
January The first training session in January started with an icebreaker leading up to educating facilitators on team work and setting goals for the year. The main focus was on classroom management, discipline and the role of facilitators in the programme. Facilitators soon realised their required contribution in making the programme a success and were shown how classroom management and discipline contribute to the provision of a better afterschool environment. They were given an example of a lesson plan and spent...
Three facilitator trainings took place during the 3rd tem. Trainings were consistently well attended and we welcomed six new facilitators to the group namely, Chaldene Willemse (Esperance Farm), Nyemeka Gcanga (Klawervlei Farm), Jody Botha (Nuystasie Primary), Margaret Windvogel (Simonsig Farm), Pamela Miller (Buffet Olives) and Asanda Hlekani (Leipzig Primary). July training The facilitators received feedback regarding the June examination and learner reports were distributed. Training focused on teaching grouping techniques to younger learners while the older learners were schooled in the two...
The themes for the last few months were: teamwork, problem solving, creativity, body and spatial awareness and empathy. While our key focus was on working together as a group to be able to complete and enjoy the life skills games, we noted many outcomes from our sessions. Teamwork: Working as a team helped learners to be more patient with each other and taught them how to communicate with one another in a respectful way. With this mind set, they were able...
