In working towards encouraging the holistic development of underprivileged rural children, one of the Anna Foundation’s top priorities is to empower, equip and employ local women to support the children in their communities through our “3 Rs Programme: Reading, Running, Right-ing”. We currently train and employ 35 rural women to facilitate our professionally developed programme at 17 rural after-school projects. These ladies are the real heroes of the Foundation who pour their love and time into our learners, day in...
It has been an incredibly fast-paced and jam-packed first half of the year at the Anna Foundation. In a way, it feels like we made up for many of the opportunities we could not offer the children in the previous 2 years! This has taken admirable dedication from all of our staff members, going above and beyond what is required of them on a daily basis. I feel incredibly grateful to have this team of passionate people investing so much...
The Anna Foundation’s afterschool programmes are located on various working farms throughout the Western Cape, and the majority of our learners are farm workers’ children. Having grown up on the farm, the children are accustomed to sights of the surrounding vineyards and the visitors entering the tasting rooms, but many of them have not put together the entire puzzle of what exactly is happening around them. This past term, we collaborated with our agricultural partners to organize educational farm tours...
The curtains of 2022 have opened to reveal many magical adventures for the children of the Anna Foundation. The wonderful people of The Playhouse Theatre and The Drama Factory in Somerset West have set aside theatre seats for our children to attend four fantastic productions this past term. First off, the younger children from our Neethlingshof after-school went diving into the depths of The Playhouse Theatre to learn the tale of The...
Our Life Skills Programme is exciting and fun and this term we have had many laughs together. An important lesson learnt is that “we do not laugh at each other, but with each other!” The concept of using play activities, dance, music and enactment to learn about the world and process life situations is not new. Humans have been doing this through the centuries. Children also do this in a very natural way. Unfortunately the environments in which some children find...
On the afternoon of 13 June, kids from our Groot Constantia after-school went on an adventure to the city centre and the Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome. It was heart-warming to see their star-struck faces as they went on a virtual voyage to follow the secrets of The Sun, Our Living Star in this animated planetarium show. Thank you to Wardah Harris and the team at Iziko for welcoming us with open arms! A few facts our kids took home with...
Thursday evening, 25 April One of our 3 Rs (Right-ing) uses drama to teach life skills and self-confidence. So, we were over the moon when treated to a special preview performance of Cinderella the Panto at the Playhouse Theatre Somerset West! Thank you for an evening of magic! The kids from our Neethlingshof after-school were captivated from beginning to end. It’s so important that our future generation be introduced to the enchantment of the performing arts. ...
As part of the Anna Foundation teenage workshops through USIKO our teenagers enjoyed an energising hike in the valley of Jonkershoek. For many of our teenagers, (who do not have the opportunity to have outings like this and often just stay on their farms on the weekend,) this was a really unique experience. They all enjoyed the walk and engaging with nature. The hike was beautifully organised by USIKO and we are very grateful to them. Leana Claasen our...
The Anna Foundation believes in a sustainable future for each and every learner attending the Anna Foundation after school programme. Workshops are provided for our teenagers to guide them to dream of their own positive path in life. Recently our teenagers benefited from the Usiko Stellenbosch Youth Development Project, a programme to build resilience, self-reliance, independence and self-esteem.
